Concert 4: “Gems of the Renaissance”
A journey across Renaissance Europe, celebrating some of the era’s greatest vocal music.
Beginning on the Iberian peninsula, we discover Spanish masters Tomás Luis de Victoria and Alonso Lobo, and lesser-known Portuguese composer Diogo Dias Melgás. The programme will then travel through France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, before arriving in Britain for music by Scottish composer Robert Ramsey and English greats Thomas Tallis, Robert Parsons & William Byrd.
Renaissance polyphony is often held as the gold standard of vocal music, and for good reason! At its best the style brings a remarkable marriage of horizontal and vertical textures, creating a fluidity of sound where the composers’ intricate artistry manifests in seemingly effortless beauty. With this selection of some of the greatest music from the era, we hope to bring you musical magic in one of its purest forms.
